Somgreen has launched a new Sustainable Agriculture Initiative aimed at strengthening food security, enhancing climate resilience, and promoting environmentally responsible farming systems across Somalia. The initiative reflects Somgreen’s broader commitment to supporting rural communities through integrated, forward-looking solutions that address both immediate agricultural needs and long-term sustainability challenges.
A key pillar of the initiative is investment in agricultural research and innovation. Somgreen will focus on developing drought-tolerant crop varieties through systematic testing and trialing, with particular emphasis on open-pollinated varieties (OPVs) to ensure affordability, adaptability, and farmer-led seed systems. In addition, the initiative will work to recover and reintroduce Somalia’s lost traditional crop varieties and landraces by collecting, evaluating, and retrialing them—helping to restore agricultural biodiversity and strengthen resilience to climate variability.
All research activities will be conducted in line with the protocols of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (FMoAI) and SARIS, ensuring scientific rigor, national alignment, and relevance to local farming conditions. The process will be followed by formal variety release procedures to guarantee that new and reintroduced crops meet quality and performance standards for Somali farmers.
Beyond research, the initiative promotes sustainable land and water management practices, supports farmer capacity building, and encourages the adoption of climate-smart agricultural techniques. Through this comprehensive approach, Somgreen aims to empower communities, improve livelihoods, and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable agricultural future for Somalia.
This initiative is further complemented by Somgreen’s broader programmatic experience, including efforts to restore climate-resilient agriculture and market systems, rehabilitate riverbank ecosystems and strengthen flood resilience along the Shabelle River, and empower youth through skills development, green livelihoods, and employment opportunities. Together, these efforts reinforce an integrated approach to sustainability, resilience, and inclusive development across Somalia.
